Social Security Number (SSN)

アメリカで働くには、社会保障番号(Social Security Number)を取得しなければなりません。

年金や個人の収支を記録するのが本来の役割との事ですが、身分証明書として提出を
求められる場合も多くある様です。自動車免許取得にも必要です。

という事で、Social Security Office (1463 Tobias Gadson Blv Charleston, SC 29407)に行ってきました。
まず、入り口のコンピューターで受け付けします。予約があるかどうか聞かれますが、
そんなものはないので予約無しで選択しました。
待つこと一時間、やっと自分の受付番号を呼ばれ、窓口へ

窓口では、まずApplicationを書いてくれ、と言われました。
受付の姉ちゃん、先に教えてほしかったよ。一時間も待ってたのに．．．
Applicationの項目は以下の通りです

Application for a Social Security Card
 1. Name
 2. Social Security number previously assigned to the person listed in item1
 3  Place of birth
 4. Date of birth
 5. Citizenship
 6. Ethnicity ( Are you Hispanic or Latino?)
 7. Race
 8. Sex
 9. A Mother's name at her birth, B Mother's social security number
 10. A Father's name, B Father's social security number
 11. Has the person listed in item 1 or anyone acting on his/her behalf ever filed for or received a Social Security number card before? (Yes →answer 12,13,  No,  Don't know→skip to 14)
 12. Name shown on the most recent Social Security card issued for the person listed in item 1.
 13. Enter any different date of birth if used on an earlier application for a card.
 14. Today's date
 15. Daytime phone number
 16. Mailing address
 17. Your signature

Item7 でRaceとありまして、選択肢は Native Hawaiian, American Indian, Other pacific Islande, Alaska Native,  Black/African American, White, Asian　となっています。敢えて人種を書く欄があって、しかもBlackなんて書いてあって良いのか？　と思ってしまいました。下段に、一応 Your Response is Voluntaryの記載がありまして、必須ではない事となっています。

申し込み用紙を入力後、受付の人がデータを入力し、待つこと５分。最後に受付用紙を一枚受領しました。
記載内容は、以下の通りでした。

・SSNは、2週間以内に発行される
・SSNはとても大切なので、厳重に保管する事。財布に入れて保管しない事

近く引っ越しの予定があるので、USPS(郵便局)の転送手続きも必要です。こちらはonlineで手続きが出来ます。
